How it started

The gap nobody was filling

Walk into any Chapters or Indigo and you'll see the same mass-produced journals, the same generic greeting cards, the same uninspired paper goods on every shelf. Walk into a high-end design shop and you'll find gorgeous stationery — at prices that make independent retailers wince.

We saw this gap every day. Indie retailers across Canada — the bookshops, the gift boutiques, the neighbourhood concept stores — were stuck. They wanted to stock paper goods that matched their aesthetic and their values, but the options were either too generic, too expensive, or required massive minimum orders that a small shop simply can't absorb.

Paperly was built to bridge that gap. We partner directly with independent makers and small studios to source stationery that's distinctive, beautifully crafted, and priced so that a shop owner can actually make money selling it. I've been obsessed with paper for as long as I can remember. Not just any paper — the kind that makes you pause. The weight of a well-made notebook. The texture of a letterpress card. The quiet satisfaction of a pen gliding across a page that was made with intention.

Before Paperly, I spent years in retail, working alongside independent shop owners who poured their hearts into curating beautiful spaces for their communities. The one thing I kept hearing was: “I love great stationery, but I can't find a wholesale source that actually understands what I need.”

They didn't want a 500-page catalog of generic products. They wanted someone who would do the hard work of finding exceptional paper goods, negotiate fair pricing, and deliver it in a way that respected their time and their taste.
